Everything you need to know about VST3 and AU plugins, from installation and authorization to DAW setup and performance optimization. Built for producers who want their tools to just work.
Plugin Formats Explained
Audio plugins are software instruments and effects that run inside your DAW. The two main formats Monakai Audio supports are VST3 and AU (Audio Units).
VST3
Steinberg's modern plugin standard. Works in Ableton Live, Cubase, Reaper, FL Studio, Studio One, and most Windows and macOS DAWs. Smaller CPU footprint and smarter I/O than older VST2.
AU (Audio Units)
Apple's native macOS plugin format. Required for Logic Pro and supported by Ableton Live, Reaper, and Studio One on Mac. Optimized for macOS performance.
Standalone
Some Monakai Audio plugins also run as standalone apps — no DAW required. Great for quick sound design, practice, or live use.
Installation
Windows
- Download the installer or ZIP from your Monakai Audio account.
- Run the installer and choose your VST3 folder, or extract the .vst3 file to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3. - Rescan plugins in your DAW preferences.
- Restart your DAW if the plugin does not appear.
macOS
- Download the macOS package from your account.
- Mount the DMG and run the installer, or copy the .vst3 / .component files to
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3or~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. - If Gatekeeper blocks the plugin, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
- Rescan plugins in your DAW and restart if needed.
DAW Compatibility
Monakai Audio plugins are tested in the most popular production environments. Here is where each format works best:
Ableton Live
Use VST3 on Windows and Mac. AU also works on Mac. Enable the plugin folder in Preferences → Plug-ins.
Logic Pro
Use AU (Audio Units). Logic does not support VST. Rescan in Logic Settings → Plug-in Manager.
Cubase / Nuendo
VST3 is the native format. Scan paths in Studio → Studio Setup → VST Plug-in Manager.
Reaper
VST3 and AU both work. Add plugin paths in Options → Preferences → Plug-ins → VST/AU.
FL Studio
VST3 on Windows and macOS. Manage plugins in Options → Manage Plugins.
Studio One
VST3 and AU on Mac. Set locations in Studio One → Preferences → Locations → Plug-ins.
Authorization
Monakai Audio plugins use a simple license-key system. When you first open a plugin, enter the license key from your account or confirmation email. The plugin will validate online and bind to your machine.
- Each license allows activation on up to 3 computers.
- To move a license, deactivate the plugin on the old machine from the plugin menu.
- If you lose your key, log into your Monakai Audio account to view all licenses.
Performance Tips
- Buffer size: Lower buffer sizes reduce latency but increase CPU use. Start at 256 or 512 samples and adjust for your system.
- Oversampling: High-quality processing sounds great but costs CPU. Disable oversampling when tracking or writing.
- Freeze tracks: Bounce plugin-heavy tracks to audio to free up CPU during mixing.
- Close unused instances: Multiple plugin instances add up. Close anything not in use.
- Update drivers: Keep your audio interface drivers and DAW updated for the best stability.
Troubleshooting
Plugin does not appear in my DAW
- Verify the plugin file is in the correct VST3 or AU folder.
- Rescan plugins in your DAW preferences.
- On macOS, check Privacy & Security for Gatekeeper blocks.
- Restart your DAW after installation.
Crackles, dropouts, or high CPU
- Increase your audio interface buffer size.
- Freeze or bounce CPU-heavy tracks.
- Disable oversampling or HQ modes while writing.
- Close background apps and browser tabs.
Authorization fails
- Check that you entered the full key correctly, including dashes.
- Ensure your computer has an internet connection for the first activation.
- If you hit the activation limit, deactivate an old machine first.
