Why One Compressor Is Often Not Enough#
Serial compression means running two compressors back to back on the same vocal, each doing a small, specific job. It sounds like overkill until you try to make a single compressor do both jobs at once — then it sounds like wisdom. I resisted it for years. Then I heard the difference on a hook I couldn't get to sit, and I never went back.
A vocal is a wildly dynamic source. Whispered verses sit next to belted hooks, and when I set one compressor to tame the loud peaks, it either crushes the life out of the quiet parts or barely touches the loud ones. Ask one device to do everything and you get audible pumping, dulled transients and that unmistakable "squashed demo" character. I've printed that sound more times than I'd like to admit.
So I split the work. The first compressor reacts fast and only trims the tallest peaks. The second moves slowly and gently levels the overall loudness so the vocal stays glued to its place in the mix. Each stage works lightly, so neither one leaves obvious fingerprints. This is the classic 1176 into LA-2A chain that has lived on rap, pop and R&B vocal tracks for decades — and you can approximate it convincingly with Ableton's stock devices.

Stage One: Catch the Peaks Fast#
The first compressor in the chain is the peak catcher — the 1176-style FET role. Its only job is to grab the loudest syllables before they hit anything downstream. Because it only works on the top few dB of the performance, I can run it fast without strangling the body of the vocal.
In Ableton Live, I drop a stock Compressor on the vocal track and start here:
- Ratio: 4:1 — firm enough to stop peaks, not a limiter.
- Attack: 1–5 ms. Fast enough to catch consonants and plosive spikes.
- Release: 40–80 ms, or Auto if the performance is busy. Fast recovery keeps it invisible.
- Threshold: Lower it until you see gain reduction only on the loudest words — roughly 2–4 dB at the biggest peaks, nothing on quiet lines.
- Knee: Medium. A soft-ish knee keeps the peak trimming smooth rather than clipped.
Solo the vocal and watch the gain reduction meter. If the needle moves on every word, the threshold is too low and you are doing stage two's job in stage one. Back off until only the offenders get caught. I used to chase every syllable like it owed me money. Don't.
Stage Two: Slow Optical Leveling#
With the spikes gone, the second compressor can do the musical work: slow, gentle, program-dependent leveling — the LA-2A-style optical role. Optical compressors respond to the average level of the signal rather than individual transients, which is why they sound so natural on vocals. The vocal rises and falls with the song instead of jumping around phrase to phrase.
In Live, I add a Glue Compressor after the stock Compressor. Despite the name, its slower settings behave beautifully as a leveler:
- Ratio: 2:1 — this stage should feel like a hand on the fader, not a vice.
- Attack: 10–30 ms (the slowest available settings). Let the shaped transients from stage one pass through untouched.
- Release: 0.2–0.4 s or Auto. Long enough to follow phrases, short enough to reset between them.
- Threshold: Aim for 1–3 dB of slow, breathing gain reduction that rides up and down with the performance.
Bypass both stages and toggle them in together. The processed vocal should sit in one place in the mix without you reaching for the fader — but it should still breathe. If it sounds flatter emotionally, you have gone too far. The presets I shipped in Fire Vocals v2.0 are useful reference points here: load one, then study how I balanced the two stages before dialing in your own.
How Much Gain Reduction Per Stage#
The whole philosophy of serial compression is small numbers. If either of my stages shows more than about 4 dB of gain reduction on a regular basis, I'm probably asking one device to do too much — which is the exact problem this technique exists to solve.
My starting targets for a typical lead vocal:
- Stage one (peak catcher): 2–4 dB of reduction, only on the loudest peaks. Meter should be still most of the time.
- Stage two (leveler): 1–3 dB of slow, constant movement. The meter should drift, not snap.
- Combined: 4–7 dB of total control — enough to hold a vocal upfront in a dense mix without audible squash.
Match your makeup gain so the bypassed and processed signals are the same loudness, or you will fool yourself into thinking louder is better — the oldest trick your ears play on you. For a refresher on why that matters, my lesson on volume versus gain is worth ten minutes of your time.

Once the vocal sits right, resist the urge to keep compressing at the bus. Leave the final level decisions to the end of the chain — I built LOUD for exactly that job, and a dedicated limiter on the master handles last-stage level far more transparently than a third compressor on the vocal ever will.
Try It Yourself in Ableton#
You can build the full chain with stock devices in about five minutes. This is exactly how I set it up in my own sessions:
- Load a lead vocal on an audio track. High-pass it with EQ Eight around 80–100 Hz first — rumble and mic handling noise make compressors work on energy you cannot hear.
- Add a Compressor. Set Ratio 4:1, Attack 3 ms, Release 60 ms, medium knee.
- Play the loudest section of the song in a loop. Pull the Threshold down until the gain reduction meter shows 2–4 dB on the biggest peaks only. Set Makeup manually so the output matches the bypassed level.
- Add a Glue Compressor after it. Set Ratio 2:1, Attack 30 ms, Release 0.4 s (or Auto), Soft Clip off.
- Lower the Glue's Threshold until the meter drifts slowly between 1–3 dB of reduction, following the phrases. Again, match output level to input.
- Un-solo the vocal and A/B the whole chain against the dry signal in the full mix. If the vocal is now consistently readable but still breathes, you are done. If it pumps, raise stage one's threshold; if it sounds flat, raise stage two's threshold.
- Group both devices into an Audio Effect Rack and save it as "Vocal — Serial Comp" so the chain is one drag away in every future session.
