What a Send Actually Does#
An insert sits directly on a track and processes 100% of the signal passing through it. A send works differently: it taps a copy of the dry signal and routes it to a return track, where the reverb lives. The dry track keeps playing untouched, and the return adds its wet signal on top, blended in parallel at the master.
In Ableton Live, every track has send knobs labeled A, B, C and so on — one per return track in your set. Turn up Send A on a vocal, and a copy of that vocal flows into Return A. I treat each send knob as a per-track wet/dry control, while the reverb itself stays in a single place.
Ableton sends are post-fader by default, so pulling the track fader down also pulls down what hits the reverb, keeping the wet/dry ratio constant. Right-click a send and you can switch it to pre-fader, which is useful for headphone-style effects or when you want reverb even with the source muted. Small detail, big difference — and one of the first things I check on any session I inherit.
Why Pros Default to Return Tracks#
I default to return tracks for three reasons, and they compound:
- CPU: One reverb on a return serves twenty tracks. Twenty inserted reverbs means twenty plugin instances eating cycles. On a big session, that is the difference between smooth playback and the audio dropouts of shame.
- Cohesion: Sending drums, vocals and synths into the same space glues them together. They sound like they were recorded in one room, because — as far as the listener knows — they were.
- Control: A return is a full mixer channel. You can EQ it, compress it, automate its fader, or duck it, without touching any source track.
My mix templates start with two or three reverb returns: a short plate or room for drums and rhythm elements, and a longer hall for vocals and leads. I built TheeVerb for exactly this job — load it on a return, set it to 100% wet, and every send knob in the session becomes a depth control into that one shared space.

When Inserts Are the Right Call#
Sends are the default, not the law. Insert your reverb when the reverb is the sound:
- Special-effect spaces: A gigantic washed-out pad, a reversed swell, a dub delay-verb hybrid on one synth. Nobody else in the session needs that space, so keep it on the track.
- 100% wet moments: Throwing a sound fully into reverb for a transition is cleaner with an insert and a dry/wet automation lane than with a send plus a muted source.
- Close, characterful treatments: A short, gritty room mic simulation on a snare or a tight ambience on a vocal often works better inserted at low wet levels, because it is tone-shaping, not space-building. Vocal Verb is built for exactly this kind of vocal-tailored space, whether you insert it gently or send to it for a bigger tail.
- Before other processing: Sometimes you want reverb into a distortion or compressor on the same chain. That is impossible with a send, which always lands at the master.
The litmus test: if more than one track would benefit from the same reverb, it belongs on a return. If the reverb is part of one sound's identity, insert it and move on with your life.
EQ and Duck Your Reverb Returns#
The biggest reverb mistake is not choosing the wrong algorithm — it is letting the tail eat the mix. Two moves on the return track fix almost everything.
EQ the return. Drop an EQ Eight after the reverb. High-pass around 200–300 Hz to keep low-mid mud out of the tail, and low-pass somewhere between 6–10 kHz so the reverb does not sparkle over your cymbals and vocal air. Real rooms dampen extremes; your return should too. This alone makes a cheap reverb sound expensive.
Duck the return against the dry signal. Add a Compressor after the EQ, enable its sidechain (the triangle toggle in the device header), and set the source to your lead vocal or main element. Use a ratio around 3:1, fast attack, and a release near 150–250 ms. Now the reverb dips a few dB while the vocal sings and blooms back into the gaps between phrases. The dry signal stays forward and intelligible, and you still get the big tail — just not at the same time. Both TheeVerb and Vocal Verb respond beautifully to this treatment on a return.
One more weapon: pre-delay. A 20–60 ms pre-delay holds the reverb back so the dry transient lands first, keeping the source defined even with generous send levels. If your reverb has no pre-delay control, put a Simple Delay set to 100% wet, no feedback, before it on the return.
Try It Yourself in Ableton#
Build a proper reverb return from scratch. Five minutes, stock devices, repeatable in every set:
- Press
Ctrl+Alt+T(or right-click near the master) to create a return track. Rename itVERB HALL. - Drop a reverb on it — Hybrid Reverb in Hall mode works, or load TheeVerb. Set it to 100% wet with a decay around 2.5 seconds and 30 ms of pre-delay.
- On a vocal track, raise
Send Ato about -12 dB. Confirm the send is post-fader (right-click the send to check), so the reverb follows your vocal rides. - Add
EQ Eightafter the reverb on the return: high-pass at 250 Hz, low-pass at 8 kHz. Solo the return and listen to how much cleaner the tail gets. - Add a
Compressorafter EQ Eight. Open its sidechain section, set Audio From to your vocal track, ratio 3:1, attack 1 ms, release 200 ms, and pull the threshold until you see 3–6 dB of gain reduction while the vocal plays. - A/B the whole return against an inserted reverb on the same vocal at a matched wet level. Notice how the send version keeps the consonants crisp while the insert version smears them. That is the entire point of this article.
