What Gain Staging Actually Is#
Gain staging is the practice of managing signal level at every point it passes through — from the clip on the timeline, through each device in the chain, into buses, and finally out of the master. The goal is simple: keep every stage in its sweet spot so nothing clips, nothing gets buried in noise, and every plugin receives the level it was designed to hear.
It is not about making things loud. Loudness is a mastering decision. Gain staging is about headroom — the gap between your signal and digital full scale (0 dBFS). In my sessions, protecting that gap is non-negotiable: my compressors breathe, my saturators warm up instead of farting out, and my mix bus stops sounding like it is fighting for its life.

The Numbers That Matter in Live#
Here is the part that confuses people: Ableton Live mixes internally in 64-bit floating point. That means the channel faders and even the master can technically go above 0 dBFS without true digital clipping inside the engine. So why do I still bother gain staging every session?
Because your plugins are not floating point magic. Most compressors, saturators and analog emulations are calibrated around a nominal input level — the digital equivalent of 0 VU on analog gear. That reference is -18 dBFS. Feed a plugin a signal hovering around -18 dBFS RMS (peaks somewhere near -10 to -6 dBFS) and it behaves the way its designer intended. Slam it with a signal peaking at -1 dBFS and you are driving every stage into distortion before you have touched a single knob.
These are the targets I use in every Live session:
- Individual tracks: peaks around -10 to -6 dBFS, average near -18 dBFS.
- Group/bus channels: peaks no higher than -6 dBFS.
- Master pre-limiter: peaks around -6 to -3 dBFS, leaving room for the final loudness stage.
Watch Live's channel meters, and expand the master meter to see peak and RMS side by side. For proper loudness readings, I keep a free LUFS meter on the master — it tells you far more than the peak meter alone, and loudness is what streaming platforms actually measure.
Gain Staging Every Stage of the Chain#
In Live, level can be adjusted in at least four places per track, and they are not interchangeable:
- Clip gain: The gain control inside the clip editor. This is your first stage — set it before anything else so devices see a sane input.
- Device input/output: Many devices have their own input trim or output level. Match output to input when bypassing, so you compare tone, not volume.
- Utility device: Live's stock Utility is the cleanest way to trim level anywhere in a chain. Its Gain knob goes from -35 dB to +35 dB and adds zero color.
- Channel fader: The last stage. Use faders for mixing balance, not for rescuing a signal that was already too hot at the clip.
A healthy chain looks like this: clip gain gets the raw recording near -18 dBFS, each processor hands roughly the same level to the next (drop a Utility after anything that adds makeup gain), and the fader rides around unity for balance. When my drums hit a transient shaper like 50Cal, that discipline pays off immediately. I built 50Cal as a multiband transient shaper that judges attack and sustain by level, so a consistent input means the threshold I set on the kick band actually behaves the same on the snare band.
The final stage is the master. If you have staged everything well, your mix bus should peak around -6 dBFS with no master fader heroics. That leftover headroom is exactly what I designed LOUD by Monakai to work with — it can push perceived loudness up to competitive levels without grinding your transients into paste.
Try It Yourself in Ableton#
Open your current session and run this pass with me. It takes about ten minutes:
- Reset the master fader to 0 dB. Pull it down temporarily if you need to protect your ears, but the final staging happens with it at unity.
- Solo your loudest track (usually the kick or lead). Open its clip and use clip gain until the channel meter peaks around -8 dBFS. Do not touch the fader.
- Bring in tracks one at a time, setting each clip or Utility gain so every channel peaks between -10 and -6 dBFS on its own. Aim for the master to sit near -6 dBFS with everything playing.
- Insert a Utility after any compressor or saturator and match its output to the bypassed level within about 0.5 dB. A/B with the device bypassed — if the "improvement" disappears, it was just louder, not better.
- Check your drum bus with a transient shaper. Insert 50Cal on the drum group, solo the low band around 60–120 Hz, and add 2–3 dB of attack. If the input is staged near -18 dBFS, the band thresholds will respond predictably.
- Put a loudness meter on the master and note the integrated LUFS of your mix. Then insert LOUD by Monakai after it and raise the gain until you gain roughly 4–6 LUFS. With proper headroom, you will hit that target before the limiter starts pumping.
- Save the session as a template. Strip the clips, keep the Utility trims and routing, and every future track starts with sane gain structure built in.
Mistakes That Ruin Headroom#
Most headroom problems come from a short list of habits — and yes, I've committed every one of them:
- Recording or importing too hot: Samples normalized to 0 dBFS leave you nowhere to go. Trim them at clip gain the moment they land in the session.
- Boosting into every EQ: A +6 dB shelf at 10 kHz is also +6 dB of level into the next device. Compensate with the EQ's output or a Utility.
- Chasing loudness on the master fader: Turning the master down does not fix over-hot channels feeding plugins upstream. Fix the source.
- Stacking makeup gain: Compressor adds 4 dB, saturator adds 3 dB, and suddenly your bus is clipping. Match each device's output as you go.
- Confusing meter color with truth: Live's meters go red at the channel level, but remember — the real damage is what over-hot levels do inside your plugins, not the float engine.
