High-Pass Everything Except What Needs Low#
The single most impactful EQ move in any mix is also the most boring one: remove low-frequency energy from tracks that do not need it. In my sessions, hi-hats, pads, guitars, vocals and most synth leads all carry rumble, mic handling noise and synth sub-harmonics that you cannot hear on small speakers — but they pile up on the master bus and eat your headroom.
In EQ Eight, I grab band 1, set it to a high-pass filter at 12 or 24 dB/oct, and sweep it up until the track starts to sound thin — then I back it off 10–20 Hz. My typical starting points:
- Vocals: 80–120 Hz
- Guitars and keys: 100–150 Hz
- Hi-hats and shakers: 300–500 Hz
- Pads and strings: 120–200 Hz
- Snare: 80–100 Hz, to taste
What stays unfiltered? Kick, bass, and anything that is genuinely a low-end element. That is it. In my mixes, two tracks own the subs; everything else is a guest. Cut Mud Before You Boost Anything#
"Mud" lives roughly between 200 and 500 Hz, and almost every recorded or synthesized sound has too much of it. The instinct when something sounds dull is to boost the top. The move I have learned to trust instead is the opposite: cut the mud first, and the top end often takes care of itself because you have unmasked it.

Try a broad bell on EQ Eight — Q around 0.7 to 1.0 — at 300 Hz, pulled down 2 to 4 dB on your muddiest elements: usually stacked guitars, thick pads, piano and the drum bus. On the mix bus, a 1 to 2 dB dip around 250–400 Hz can clean up the entire track without anyone being able to point at what changed — including the client, which is often the whole point.

Hunt Resonances With a Narrow Sweep#
Some sounds have one or two frequencies that ring out like a struck wine glass — a snare that honks at 800 Hz, a vocal that whistles at 3 kHz, a synth that screams somewhere in the upper mids. Here is how I hunt them:
- Set a bell band in EQ Eight with a narrow Q (6–10) and boost it hard, +10 dB or more.
- Slowly sweep the frequency while the loop plays until the offensive ring jumps out.
- Flip the boost into a cut of 3–6 dB and widen the Q slightly until it sounds natural.
Two Ableton-specific helpers I use constantly: enable the band solo (headphone) button on the band to audition exactly what that band is removing, and switch EQ Eight's mode from natural phase (default, minimal latency, slight phase shift) to linear phase for parallel processing or mix-bus work where phase coherence matters. For precise, repeatable cuts like this across a whole session, I built 50Cal for exactly this problem — up to 50 bands of precision EQ, surgical enough for resonance hunting and fast enough that you will actually finish the mix.
The Presence Zone: 2 to 5 kHz#
The 2–5 kHz region is where human hearing is most sensitive — it is where speech intelligibility and "in your face" character live. Small moves here have outsized effects, so I keep them small. A 1–2 dB boost at 3 kHz on a lead vocal pushes it forward without touching the fader. A matching 1–2 dB cut at 3 kHz on competing elements (guitars, synth stabs, piano) makes room for that vocal without turning anything down.
This is also the danger zone: overdo it and your mix becomes fatiguing within a minute. If a track sounds harsh, the answer is usually a gentle dip somewhere between 2.5 and 4 kHz — not pulling the high shelf down, which just makes things dull. I use EQ Eight's mid/side mode here too: cutting 3 kHz only on the sides keeps the centered vocal present while taming wide, harsh synths.
Air Without Harshness#
"Air" is the shimmer above 10 kHz that makes a mix sound expensive. In EQ Eight, I use a high shelf at 10–12 kHz and lift 1–3 dB on vocals, overheads, acoustic guitars and the mix bus. The trick is staying above the sibilance region (5–8 kHz) — if your "air" boost makes esses spit, your shelf is set too low or you need a de-esser first.
On the mix bus, turn on EQ Eight's oversampling before adding top-end shelves — it keeps the filter response accurate near the Nyquist frequency so your 12 kHz shelf does not cramp. And remember the flip side of air: if everything has a top boost, nothing sounds airy. Contrast is the effect. Rolling the extreme top off background elements with something like Filter Knob makes the leads sparkle by comparison.
EQ in Context, Not Solo#
Every move above should be made while the full mix plays. A kick that sounds thin in solo might be perfect against the bass. A vocal that sounds dull in solo might slice through the arrangement exactly right. I treat solo as a diagnostic tool — fine for finding problems (resonance hunting is the exception where solo is genuinely useful) — but the decisions belong in context.

A practical workflow I have used for years: loop the busiest eight bars of the song, then EQ every channel against that loop. If you cannot hear whether a cut helps, the cut probably does not matter. Then check it in the car, because the car is where every confident mix decision goes to be humbled. Try It Yourself in Ableton#
Open your current session and run the same drill I use when a mix feels foggy:
- Drop EQ Eight on every track except kick and bass. Set band 1 to a 24 dB/oct high-pass and place it: vocals 100 Hz, guitars 120 Hz, hats 400 Hz, pads 150 Hz.
- On the muddiest two tracks, add a bell at 300 Hz, Q 0.8, gain −3 dB. A/B with the device power button.
- On your snare, set a bell to Q 8, +10 dB, and sweep 400 Hz–2 kHz until the honk jumps out. Cut that spot −4 dB.
- On the lead vocal, boost +1.5 dB at 3 kHz (Q 1). On the bus it fights with, cut −1.5 dB at the same frequency.
- On the mix bus EQ Eight, enable Oversampling in the right-click context menu, then add a high shelf at 12 kHz, +2 dB. If it gets harsh, lower the shelf to 10 kHz and halve the gain.
- Switch the mix-bus EQ Eight to M/S mode via the channel selector and cut −2 dB at 3.5 kHz on the sides only. Listen to how the center stays forward while the width relaxes.
- Bypass every EQ Eight at once with a group, then re-enable. If the difference is not clearly better, undo half your cuts. Subtle wins.
