How to Install VST3 Plugins on Windows
VST is a trademark of Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH, registered in Europe and other countries.
A complete guide for Ableton Live, FL Studio, Reaper, Cubase, Studio One, and every VST3-compatible DAW.
1. Download the Plugin
After claiming a free license or purchasing a plugin, download the installer or complete package from your account or the product page. The file will be a Windows executable installer or a zip containing the .vst3 bundle.
2. Run the Installer
Run the installer as Administrator. The Monakai Audio installer places files in two locations:
- VST3 plugin:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\ - Program files:
C:\Program Files\MonakaiAudio\[PluginName]\
If you see a Windows SmartScreen warning, click More info then Run anyway. This is normal for independent software without a commercial code-signing certificate.
3. Restart Your DAW
Close and reopen your DAW. Most DAWs only scan for new plugins at startup, so a restart is required.
4. Scan for Plugins
Open your DAW's plugin manager or preferences and scan for new VST3 plugins. In most DAWs, the default VST3 folder is already included:
Ableton Live
Preferences → Plug-ins → Rescan. VST3 plug-ins appear under the Plug-ins browser.
FL Studio
Options → Manage plugins → Start scan. Find plugins in the plugin database under Installed → Generators or Effects.
Reaper
Options → Preferences → Plug-ins → VST → Re-scan. Insert via FX browser.
Cubase
Studio → Studio Setup → VST Plug-in Manager → Rescan. Plugins appear in the MediaBay.
Studio One
Studio One → Preferences → Locations → VST Plug-ins → Start scan. Drag from the browser.
Bitwig
Settings → Locations → Rescan. Plugins appear in the Pop-up Browser.
5. Activate Your License
Insert the plugin on a track. On first launch, enter your license key when prompted. The plugin verifies online once, then works offline. You can activate up to 3 computers per license.
